D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education)
The Division of Police deploys three Youth Resource Officers to provide DARE instruction at the elementary and middle schools. This year, officers Albrecht and Rasch will work in the elementary schools and middle schools and Officer Ackin is the youth resource officer at Lakewood High School. Each officer is assigned patrol duties around designated school buildings at the start of the school day and at dismissal.
NEIGHBORHOOD POLICING
Our Neighborhood Patrol Officer (NPO) program involves officers performing a number of assignments. Neighborhood Police Officers Fritsch in Ward 4, Fischer in Ward 3, Ortriz in Ward 2 and Busi in Ward 1 are the stereotypical representation of community oriented policing. They interact daily with the residents and business owners in their assigned areas seeking to identify situations that impact the quality of life. Together with the people in the area they identify the resources available to maintain and improve the neighborhood. Often the role the officers play is not what would traditionally be thought of as “police work”, but addressing situations that are of concern to the people who live or work in a neighborhood, regardless of the nature, is the most effective means of providing safety.
CITIZEN'S POLICE ACADEMY
This program is presented to residents of Lakewood who are interested in learning more about the Division of Police. Originally scheduled for eight sessions provided on consecutive Saturday mornings, the most recent Academy class covered nine weeks due to the addition of a class on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. Classes have been moved to Wednesday evenings. Registration is through the Lakewood Board of Education’s Adult Education Program. The academy is offered every other year.

During the sessions, students are presented with information from a number of speakers to familiarize them with a variety of policing issues in Lakewood. In addition to speakers from the Division, the Department of Law and Judge Carroll also address the class. At the end of each session the graduates are permitted to schedule a ride-along with a patrol officer for one evening.

LAKEWOOD AUXILIARY POLICE
The Lakewood Auxiliary Police Unit is a vital part of both the Police Department and the community, assisting with important duties such as traffic direction and crowd control at organized events. They provide support at events including Earth Day, band concerts, Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks, Lakewood Arts Festival. Lakewood High School Football games, Lakewood Community Festival and several annual marathons and runs through the City. Auxiliary Police Officers also have the opportunity to ride on patrol with Lakewood Police Officers. In 2008, the Lakewood Auxiliary Police performed over 3,218 service hours for the community. The Auxiliary Police increase the safety of community events and provide the necessary community support.

Applicants for the Lakewood Auxiliary must be at least 18 years of age and must pass a background investigation. Individuals who live or work outside of Lakewood are also welcome to apply. Upon completion of training, auxiliary officers are protected under the Ohio Worker's Compensation and are provided with uniforms and equipment.

Applications are available at the Lakewood Police Station, 12650 Detroit Avenue. For more information, contact Lieutenant Brian Joyce at (216) 529-6781.
