Lakewood Police Reminds Residents to Be on ‘High Alert’ for IRS Tax Scam

February 09, 2016

As the tax-filing season begins, the Lakewood Police Department is reminding residents to continue to be wary of unsolicited telephone calls and e-mails from individuals claiming to be IRS and Treasury employees.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration reports that it continues to receive reports of thousands of contacts every month in which individuals fraudulently claiming to be IRS officials make unsolicited calls and “robocalls” to taxpayers and demanding that they send them cash.

Residents are urged to remain on “high alert” for these types of scams.
