Lakewood Law Director Kevin Butler Honored With Crain’s In-House Counsel Award

December 17, 2015

Earlier this month, Crain’s Cleveland Business honored those who comprise Northeast Ohio’s outstanding legal community with the General and In-House Counsel Awards.

Lakewood Law Director Kevin Butler was named the 2015 General and In-House Counsel Award recipient in the government category.

Co-workers and colleagues at Lakewood City Hall describe Butler as “a strong leader and thoughtful mentor; deliberate strategist and attentive mediator; firm administrator and compassionate advocate; assiduous manager and gifted communicator; forward-thinking risk identifier and budget-conscious public servant.”

“We, in Lakewood, have always appreciated Kevin’s reliable, wise and sometimes witty counsel,” said City Council President Mary Louise Madigan. “Everyone in this town knows he’s a big part of Lakewood’s success and momentum. We’re thrilled he’s received this honor — and we’ll have to promote because he’s too modest.”

Butler, a hands-on leader, has helped to outline — and carry out — the city’s strategies and primary objectives. He’s been a part of key initiatives including housing, negotiating labor contracts, property reinvestment, and the administrations’ focus on public safety.

In addition, Butler has also guided the city through its legal issues regarding the future of health care in the community, as Lakewood Hospital transitions from an inpatient facility to outpatient care.

Lakewood Mayor Michael Summers said that Butler is deserving of the recognition.

“Law Director Butler has a natural ability to navigate through complicated and often emotionally charged issues confidently and calmly,” Summers said. “He’s a voice of reason and a calming presence at Lakewood City Hall.”
