Grand Opening – Lakewood City Futsal Courts at Madison ParkJuly 27, 2017
There is a new sport in town! The city is excited to announce the opening of the Madison Park Futsal Courts. Former tennis courts have been repurposed for futsal by adding a rubberized coating designed to create two futsal courts.
But, what is futsal?
Futsal is a game of fast-paced soccer, played with a smaller soccer ball, on a smaller court, and with smaller goals. Some of the best soccer players in the world attribute their amazing foot skills to the many hours spent on futsal courts.
“Futsal is an art. It is fun to watch young players being creative and expressing through futsal”, says Andrew Toth, Lakewood HS Men’s Soccer Head Coach. “Futsal is special – it brings kids of different backgrounds together in a sport they know and love.”
“The Lakewood Active Living Task Force, in its adopted 2015 recommendations report, set the mission for Lakewood to provide access to high quality recreational services and experiences citywide”, says Michelle Nochta, City Planner. “We feel strongly the creative repurposing of this space meets this mission. Futsal is widely played and enjoyed by all ages, which is a big reason we wanted to introduce it to Lakewood.”
Sunday, July 30 between 2:30 p.m. and 4:45 p.m., a free futsal program will be available for ages 9 and up. Following the open play period Lakewood High School players will play an exhibition match. Interested players should arrive at the Madison Park Pavilion at 2:00 p.m. to register and sign a waiver. This preview is presented by the Lakewood High School Men’s Soccer program.
The courts will be fully open for use by the public beginning Monday, July 31, 2017. Expect the courts to be available for pick-up, open play and league games and for futsal programming developed by Lakewood’s local soccer associations and teams in collaboration with the Lakewood Recreation Department
