Update: Detroit-Sloane Pedestrian Safety Improvements
City Staff have been working on the design for the Detroit Avenue Pedestrian Safety Improvements with our consultants, Osborn Engineering and Boulevard Studios, resulting in a streetscape design that pulls brick pavers, stamped concrete, lighting and other elements that define other Lakewood streetscapes and create the classic appearance of our historic community. While establishing a western gateway entry to Lakewood, the streetscape improvements introduce opportunities for increased pedestrian and bike traffic, social spaces and public art.
Regarding public art, it is important to note that certain elements shown in the renderings are placeholders for public art. As an example, the streetcar elements shown on the northwest and northeast corners of Detroit Sloane and in front of Harry Buffalo are such placeholders and do not depict what will ultimately be constructed. By the end of the year, the City will work with the resident-led Public Art Advisory Group to establish a call a call for artists to establish the theme for public art throughout the corridor.
City Staff also worked with the public and the City’s tree task force to establish a landscape material palette that is appropriate for the location, low-maintenance, and climate appropriate. The added greenery softens the corridor and increases the City’s tree canopy.
The streetscape plans will be reviewed by the Architectural Board of Review (ABR) next Thursday, September 10, 2020 at 5:30PM. As part of this meeting, City Staff have sent over 200 notices to businesses and property owners in the area and are continuing to meet directly with individual business and property owners throughout the design process. Please use the link below to find the current draft of the streetscape plans.

Pavement Maintenance+-
Street pavement repairs can be divided into two categories: maintenance and capital reconstruction. The large capital reconstruction projects are managed by the Division of Engineering and Construction. Pavement maintenance consist of regularly scheduled operations such as filling cracks and rejuvenating newer asphalt surfaces, sealing the joints on concrete pavements as well as minor repairs such as pothole filling. In addition, contractors are hired to remove and replace larger sections of deteriorated asphalt pavement.
