The Detroit Avenue Streetscape Plan was undertaken by the City of Lakewood, Main Street Lakewood and a planning team of consultants including City Architecture and Michael Benza & Associates.
The intention of the study was to develop a conceptual streetscape and redevelopment plan for Detroit Avenue within the City of Lakewood. The study was funded by a Transportation for Livable Communities Initiative grant from the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency and sought to accomplish the following goals.
-
SIMPLIFY: The configuration of Detroit Avenue right-of-way must be simplified to create a district with greater cohesion and a more uniform flow of traffic and on-street parking.
-
REORGANIZE & REDEFINE: Reorganize and redefine development patterns and public right-of-way enhancement standards within downtown Lakewood to support three main sub-districts – the western main street gateway, the main street district core and eastern main street gateway.
-
REBALANCE: A rebalancing of the street is necessary to accommodate the contemporary needs of the pedestrian, automobile and bicyclist.
-
REVITALIZE: Physical enhancements at key locations must occur along Detroit Avenue to revitalize and create places that residents and visitors alike will come to find synonymous with Downtown Lakewood.
