Basketball Court Ribbon Cutting at Madison Park on July 25

July 23, 2018

On Wednesday, July 25, 2018, all are encouraged to join Mayor Mike Summers and members of the Lakewood Outdoor Basketball Committee (LOBC) at a “ribbon-cutting” event opening the new full court basketball court at Madison Park. The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the new court located at the south end of Madison Park off Athens Avenue.

“Adding the new soccer futsal court last year and full court basketball court this year in Madison Park provides our residents with additional opportunities to be social, active and healthy”, said Mayor Summers.

The City of Lakewood engaged VASCO Sports Contractors to build a high-quality, lasting amenity for the community. Construction of the court began in June 2018 and is now nearing completion. The completion of the court brings full court basketball back to the City of Lakewood. This asset is a complementary addition to the half courts currently available at Lakewood Park.

The court hours will be open to all from 9:00 a.m. till dusk each day. General court rules will be posted. This accessibility is important to the community, as highlighted by Jaxen, a 10th grader at Lakewood High School, “We have wanted a full court for a while, some Lakewood kids can’t afford to pay for organized sports, so this will be great.”

LOBC, founded in 2009, has a mission to bring outdoor basketball hoops back to Lakewood. “It was a long time coming and we are excited to join with youth basketball players and the Mayor to kick off this full court basketball addition to the community”, said Roger Sikes of LOBC.

The public is invited to check out the new court, join a pick-up game, and enjoy light refreshments.
