Lakewood City Council is seeking a highly organized individual for the position of part-time Deputy Clerk of Council. The Deputy Clerk reports directly to the Clerk of Council to manage the efficient functioning of the Council Office and Council meetings. At the request of councilmembers, the Deputy Clerk will also be engaged to work on research, policy projects, docket communications, resolutions and constituent services. The work schedule is negotiable up to 29 hours per week. Incumbent must be available to staff Monday evening Council and Council committee meetings held approximately 5:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Pay rate: $16.31 – $23.03/hour

Qualified candidates should have strong writing and analytical skills, including the ability to understand and efficiently summarize the main points from lengthy public policy discussions. Preferred candidates should have experience serving in a minute-taking role, professionally or on a volunteer basis; experience with Microsoft Office and the ability to quickly learn new computer software. A demonstrated record of success in a professional, deadline-driven environment and a sense of excitement about working in government are a plus.

Additional characteristics required:

  • Have a commitment to advise and work with all members of an active City Council, who occasionally represent diverse opinions.
  • Maintain strict neutrality and impartiality in serving the City Council, its committees and members on an equally effective basis.
  • Put aside personal feelings about any public policy issue under consideration and provide prompt, efficient, effective service to Council members with varying political and public service philosophies.
  • Think and manage strategically to accomplish short-range and long-range goals while keeping an eye for accuracy and detail and a strong orientation toward customer service to the community.

Key Duties Include:

  • Meeting and agenda preparation
  • Manage audio/visual duties of Council meetings
  • Meeting follow-up duties including producing minutes, filing, etc.
  • Help maintain Councilmembers’ calendars
  • Fulfill internal and external records requests
  • Deliver excellent customer service on behalf of Councilmembers to residents who contact the Council Office and who attend Council Meetings
  • Assume role of Acting Clerk in the absence of the Clerk
  • Work directly with Councilmembers on research and policy questions related to their individual and collective legislative priorities
  • Assist with the tracking and processing of legislation, ensuring that it smoothly moves through the legislative process
  • Draft ceremonial resolutions, docket items, and constituent correspondence as assigned
