The Family Room

Drop-In Programs

The Family Room evolved from an identified need by the Lakewood Division of Early Childhood Services with a belief that if we strengthen and support parents, we ultimately strengthen our families and community. Through the vision of City government, City Schools, providers, neighborhood organizations, clergy and neighborhood residents, in 1994 a belief and a vision became a reality-The Lakewood Family Room.

The Lakewood Family Room is committed to building early childhood atmospheres where adults and children thrive, where environments foster friendship, curiosity, self-esteem and joy; where parents are welcomed and respected; where talents of all families are fully challenged and justly rewarded; where a positive difference results for the children and families that we serve. A wonderful place for a new resident raising a young family to meet other families and learn about Lakewood.

The Lakewood Family Room offers family resources and support programs that serve parents raising young children, their children and families in a wide variety of programs and environments. The Lakewood Family Room provides services for family's raising children from birth to age eight, two parents and single parent, new parents to teen parents and grandparents who now care for their grandchildren, fathers and mothers who are staying at home or are working parents. All Lakewood families are invited to participate in our programs and events offered throughout the year. With resident interest and support, the Lakewood Family Room has become an integral part of our community.

Learn Through Play

Learn Through Play is a new and exciting program at the Lakewood Family Room for parents and their children six weeks through age six.

The Family Room environment will "transform" into eleven Activity Centers throughout three rooms. Each Center will stimulate opportunities for children to learn by reading, writing, talking, listening and experiencing. They will include science, art, math, dramatic play, writing and listening stations to name a few!

Parents are always a child's first and most important teachers. Learn Through Play will provide parents their own "classroom" to assist their child in developing strong literacy skills and tools for school success.

Stop by and enjoy this wonderful new activity!

NOTE: This Family Room program is not a "drop-in" - parents must stay with their children while utilizing the Activity Centers.
